Eggcorns?
What are eggcorns? Eggcorns are words or phrases that are used incorrectly and have very different meanings than the word or phrase that was intended to be used. For example, a student might mean to write, "I feel as if I am taken for granite". The word they meant to use was "granted". Their first sentence would mean that people take this person for "granite" which is a material used in construction. Obviously, they do not mean that people mistake them for a construction material. In Romeo and Juliet, we see the word morning used. But what if the word mourning was used instead? How would this change the meaning? Morning is used to describe a time of a day. Mourning is used to describe the state of grief someone is in after suffering a loss. While both of these words apply to our text, switching them up changes the meaning of what is supposed to be said. Write a short comment to this post and give an example of an eggcorn that you have come across. You will have 15 minutes to write your comment.
